Feeling sorry for Gordon Brown
You would have thought that The Sun was more comfortable bashing Labour than cosying up to Gordon Brown, but its attempt to bring the government down by criticising his handwriting shows that they haven't got used to the idea yet. I thought that the original story was a little flimsy, but I've been staggered by the way that they've managed to drag it into a second day and by the way that other news organisations (What are the BBC doing?)have latched onto the story. If the Prime Minister was a self confident performer with a winning smile and oily turn of phrase the complaint would have been brushed aside, but Gordon Brown's already defeated demeanour makes it more likely for him to be dragged into a row with a bereaved mother while The Sun manipulates from the sidelines. Gordon Brown has made plenty of mistakes and can be attacked by the left and the right for his failures, but I can't see how an untidy handwritten letter by a man with poor eyesight and poor handwriting could possibly be seen as an insult to the war dead. I don't blame Jacqui Janes, she's a bereaved mother who's understandably angry, but The Sun has behaved poorly.
